Clothes pins can also function as a practice mute on stringed instruments: clip one or two on the bridge and it dampens the vibration, muting the sound so as to not disturb others. I doubt one would fit on a guitar bridge, and it takes a lot to mute a cello, but it works well on violins and violas.
